Thoughts From James - Day 1

                                         James 1:1-8,12

James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ,
To the twelve tribes scattered among the nations:
Greetings.2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds,3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. 6 But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7 That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. 8 Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.12 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.

Let's talk about perseverance. If you've followed my blogs at all, you've probably picked up on my obsession with one statistic, and that is that only 3 out of 10 kids from the youth group will follow Christ after graduating. If you have worked with youth or at least been a casual observer of teens in the Church, you probably would concur with that statistic. I would call the 3 that remain - perseverers  or as James would say, those with perseverance. Unlike the seed that is planted on rocky soil and burns out when trials come, these teens have faced the trials of persecution for their faith, loss of popularity, not getting invited to parties, and the attack on their faith, especially the Bible, by professors - and have persevered through it all. What can we learn about them from this passage and what tips can we learn about how to raise kids that persevere? Or, on a personal level, how can you be a person who lasts in your faith until the end when the Lord says, Well done my good and faithful servant. Enter into the kingdom I've prepared for you." ?

I think the key is found at the end of verse 12,"to those who love him". Perseverance comes on the front end. If a love relationship develops between you or the student with Christ, perseverance has a much greater chance of occurring. For example, if you go through a trial as a result of becoming a Christian, you are much more likely to just give up Christianity than endure the trial if you are just following a belief set than if you are following a "person" who you love. A person is much more difficult to give up on than an intellectual belief. Or if you lack wisdom - let's say someone says "How can you believe in a loving God who sends everyone who doesn't bow their knee to him to Hell?" If you lack wisdom, yet believe in and love God, yet don't have all the answers, you ask the Lord for answers and until you gain that wisdom, because you love Him, you trust He knows what He is doing. If you don't know Him or love Him but are just following an intellectual belief, you will begin wavering and becoming double minded and losing bits and pieces of your faith until it's all gone.

As I write this, I think of a young Christian couple, who I had to tell them that there is no heartbeat in their pregnancy and they are going to have a miscarriage. Now the question could be, "God, if children are a gift from You and you are a God of love, Why did You put a baby inside of us only to die? That seems awfully cruel!" It's not wrong to ask that question but a person who has a relationship with God and loves Him will end up saying, "I don't understand but I trust that when I see you someday You will put your arms around me, grieve with me and help me to understand." Someone who has just accepted Christianity as a belief will start losing faith and start becoming double-minded.

Let's say the police stop at my door and ask where my wife is because she stole a package from Amazon off a neighbor's porch. Although I could see myself doing that, I know my wife and could tell the officer that he or she has the wrong person. My wife would never do that. Because I know her and have had a relationship with her, wheras all the neighborhood would believe the officer because they don't know her, I would stand with her. Let's say the officer says, "I have a security camera footage showing her taking it", I would still say, "It's someone who looks like her, but not her". Let's say they showed it to me and it is indeed her. Because I love her, I would say, "Well, I'm sure she had a good reason" and continue to support her. Why? Because I've developed a 38 year relationship with her where I know her and love her and believe in her. It's not because I believe in our marriage, family, reputation, etc. that I'm defending her and trying to hang on to those. It's because I believe in her.

In my own life, growing up in a Christian family, a belief in God was instilled in me in an early age. We have tried and I would say succeeded in doing that with our 4 kids also. As my kids would say to my wife,"Mom, you see Jesus in everything!", which may have been singing her praises or exasperated cries but nonetheless illustrate the point. For me to have rejected Christianity would have been like me saying, "God, I don't believe in You anymore! Please don't be mad at me." You see, I couldn't reject Christianity because it was a "person" who I rejecting. I can't even say I really loved God till much later in my life but I did know Him, believe in Him and was developing a relationship with Him.

So what can you do with your kids? When they sin, don't say, "You sinned", or "The Bible says you shouldn't do that". Say instead, "That made Jesus sad". When you pray, get past the "Now I lay me down..." prayers and the "God is great..." prayers but say "Let's talk to Jesus..." When you see answers to prayer or God moving, point it out to the kids. Like my wife, see God in everything! As I write this, Christmas is coming. Why not wrap Jesus a present and have a birthday party for Him. It is a lot harder to give up on a person than an intellectual belief.

Top Milwaukee Brewers Prospects for 2019

Here are my top 25 prospects for the Milwaukee Brewers according to positions. I go strictly by basic stats having never seen the players. 2 players would have been included had they not been traded - Jordan Yamomoto and Wilber Perez but to get Yelich and a quality reliever like Soria was well worth it especially since I found 13 more and could have included 3 on the fence. Since Burnes and Woodruff have in my mind already arrived, I haven't included them.

My top hitter of the year; Keston Hiura. He has hit .313/.374/.502 over 1.5 years climbing 4 levels while nursing a bad elbow. Currently tearing up the AFL. Would have loved to have him as a PH in the playoffs instead of Schoop but delaying his clock is the way small market teams do it (I guess)

I have probably been doing this for 5 years and this is by far the strongest team I've put together. The future is indeed bright!

The Mendelian Principle of Raising Godly Children

The Mendelian Principle of Raising Godly Children

"Moreover, in those days I saw men of Judah who had married women from Ashdod, Ammon and Moab. 24 Half of their children spoke the language of Ashdod or the language of one of the other peoples, and did not know how to speak the language of Judah. 25 I rebuked them and called curses down on them"  Neh. 14:23,24

After Joshua had dismissed the Israelites, they went to take possession of the land, each to their own inheritance. 7 The people served the Lord throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him and who had seen all the great things the Lord had done for Israel. After that whole generation had been gathered to their ancestors, another generation grew up who knew neither the Lord nor what he had done for Israel. 11 Then the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord and served the Baals.  Judges 2: 6-11

Mendelian? What does that even mean? As a Chemistry Pre/med major in college, we had to take genetics. It was tough and I managed to eke out a low B which fortunately didn't keep me out of med school. We learned about Gregor Mendel who in 1865 proposed gene and alleles and how they combine. This was the Mendelian principle. It went something like this. In a codominant situation, lets say sickle cell anemia, two people get together and one is a carrier for sickle cell (Ss) and one isn't (SS) You could illustrate it this way in figure 1 - the top line illustrates the non carrier. They have two genes to give for S or non sickle cell. The person on the side is a carrier. They have anemia but it isn't that bad because the bad gene is balanced out by the good gene. They have one good non-sickle gene (S) and one sickle cell gene( s).When they mate you see the different potential combinations of progeny
1           S              S                      You can see that you have 2 non carriers and 2 carriers
______________________                  or basically a 50% chance of having a carrier child.
S         SS               SS                      What if a non carrier married a person with sickle cell?
______________________                  Then you would have a situation like this. The top
s        Ss                 Ss                          line is the non-affected and the line on the side is
the person with full blown sickle cell ( ss). As you
2               S                   S                        can see in figure 2, all the progeny are Ss or
_______________________              ...sickle cell carriers. If you had 2 sickle cell affected
s        Ss                  Ss                         people get married, and I don't think I need to
________________________              illustrate it, you would have all (ss) children. If you
s         Ss                 Ss                          had 2 carriers (Ss) get married , as seen in figure 3,
you would expect to see 1 out of 4 disease free (SS),
   3              S                 s                          2 out of 4 somewhat sick as carriers (Ss), and 1
________________________              out of 4 with the full blown disease (ss).
S      SS                Ss                            Lastly, what would you expect to see if a carrier,
_________________________               slightly sick person (Ss) on top marries a full blown
s      Ss                 ss                                sick person (ss) on side. Check out figure 4.
50% of the progeny would have the disease (ss)
  4           S                  s                               and 50% would be carriers (Ss).
______________________              This is one pattern of inheritance that I illustrated
s     Ss                 ss                              called codominance. There is another form
________________________              called dominant/recessive as seen in cystic fibrosis
s      Ss               ss                              where everything is the same except the carriers
aren't sick because the capital letter completely blocks the expression of the lower case gene.

         So...… What does any of that have to do with raising Godly children or the above verses? Maybe nothing but after observing families in the church over the years and how the children turn out, I think there is something to it especially the codominance pattern. Check out these verses from 1Kings 11:4 and James 4:8;

As Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods, and his heart was not fully devoted to the Lord his God, as the heart of David his father had been.

Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

The Bible says several times that David had a fully devoted heart. Joshua would be another one and you can think of multiple other examples throughout the Bible. This could be described as a person fully committed to God and certainly our goal for our lives. I would illustrate that as (HH). Then you have Solomon, the half hearted or double minded man, who had one foot with God and one foot in the world. This is probably most of us and most church members, and certainly there are a lot of examples of this in the Bible, especially Judah's kings. I would illustrate that as (Hh). As you have children with different levels of parental commitment to the Lord, you can see the expected results using mendelian principles. In the Nehemiah verse at the top of this blog, you see half hearted followers of God (Hh), marrying unbelievers (hh) and the result is 50% didn't speak the language of worship (hh) and 50% did (Hh) as seen in figure 4.
The second verse at the top talks about the people of Israel in Joshua's time. You have Joshua (HH), the Israelites who entered the promised land (Hh), and the next generation (hh). You can see how that happens because Hh x Hh gives 25% hh and Hh x hh (intermarried with people they didn't drive out) gives 50% hh. The hh population keeps expanding and it is hard to find an HH.

Take a look at your kids. Does this theory pan out? Take a look at the youth in the church. What do you think? When you see Christian marry a non christian or one spouse leaves the marriage for another person, you ever notice how half of the kids follow Christ and half don't?

Obviously this theory doesn't always hold - it's just a generalization. Also this theory probably leads to pride, guilt, and judging and not much good except if you are convicted that if you want a Godly heritage you and your spouse better get to HH!

Thoughts From Hebrews - Day 23

                                       Hebrews 9:1-14

9 Now the first covenant had regulations for worship and also an earthly sanctuary. 2 A tabernacle was set up. In its first room were the lampstand and the table with its consecrated bread; this was called the Holy Place. 3 Behind the second curtain was a room called the Most Holy Place, 4 which had the golden altar of incense and the gold-covered ark of the covenant. This ark contained the gold jar of manna, Aaron’s staff that had budded, and the stone tablets of the covenant. 5 Above the ark were the cherubim of the Glory, overshadowing the atonement cover. But we cannot discuss these things in detail now.
6 When everything had been arranged like this, the priests entered regularly into the outer room to carry on their ministry. 7 But only the high priest entered the inner room, and that only once a year, and never without blood, which he offered for himself and for the sins the people had committed in ignorance. 8 The Holy Spirit was showing by this that the way into the Most Holy Place had not yet been disclosed as long as the first tabernacle was still functioning.9 This is an illustration for the present time, indicating that the gifts and sacrifices being offered were not able to clear the conscience of the worshiper. 10 They are only a matter of food and drink and various ceremonial washings—external regulations applying until the time of the new order.11 But when Christ came as high priest of the good things that are now already here,[a] he went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not made with human hands, that is to say, is not a part of this creation. 12 He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption. 13 The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean. 14 How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!

So how were the people in the Old Testament saved? By faith, the same as us. OK. Faith in what? I recently heard a lecture from DTS on Romans where the professor addresses this. What I had always heard and believed is that they had faith that God would eventually pay their debt of sin that these temporary sacrifices couldn't pay by sending a Messiah. The problem with that is that when the Messiah came, no one was looking for Him to die but redeem them politically not spiritually. The prof says that to believe that saving faith was tied to their belief in a future one time sacrifice for their sins, that is just not right. No one understood that and I tend to agree with him. Unfortunately, the leap he then makes by taking a circuitous path through scripture is just as untenable. He comes to the conclusion that every Jew was saved by believing that Yahweh was the one who redeemed them from Egypt. Therefore, for the next 1500 years after the Exodus until Christ, Jews, would acknowledge that God delivered them as they kept feasts such as the Passover, and they would be exercising faith until the time of Christ. To me that just doesn't sound right just by the fact alone that Satan believes that and knows that to be true.

So if they weren't saved by faith in a coming Messiah nor believing that Yahweh was the one to deliver them from Egypt, how were they saved by faith?. Jesus says in the New Testament that He came for the lost sheep of Israel. How did they get lost? Who was lost? I tend to feel like it was just like  today. Imagine going to the synagogue weekly and offering a lamb for a sacrifice. Eventually you might feel like the act of going to the synagogue and the act of sacrifice saves you just like today, every religion in the world except Christianity believes you get to Heaven by good works. Even in my church, the Baptist church, people are lulled into thinking they are saved because they are doing the religious things. Salvation is about worshipping and living for God. The Old Testament sacrifices should have been done for the sole motivation of "I may not understand this but I know it honors and pleases God, so I will do it." I was reading in Genesis today where Jacob has the dream about the ladder coming from Heaven. He names the place "Bethel" or the House of God, and says if you do this and this and this and this for me - then you will be my God. Later he wrestles with God and is broken, he gets rid of all his idols, and he goes back to Bethel and renames it "El-Bethel" or the God of the house of God. See the difference? Once it was about a place and bargaining with God to get what we want. Salvation is about surrender and brokenness before God to get God, period.

I just heard a message by Francis Chan where he gave this illustration. He told his 13 year old daughter that he was going to throw her a birthday party at their house and bake a cake and that's it. He asked her how many people would come and she said, "2, probably." Then he said, what if he rented out Dave and Busters and offered free food and games - how many would come? She said, "probably the whole school." He then said, "so how many people were coming just because they love you?" The answer is 2.

Do you love God? Are you motivated by your love for God? Are you using God to get what you want or are you overwhelmed with seeing that God gets what He wants?

My Top Christian Music Songs and Albums of 2017

This year was somewhat unusual in that the usual bands didn't put out music so this list will be made up of people/bands that you may not have heard of. I will try to include Youtube links so you can listen to them. As usual, there may be some better songs but I only include those that are distinctly "Christian" by my definition (since it's my blog - ha) Also, I try not to include the ones that were played on the radio mainly because they have been so overplayed that we are all sick of them. If I were to include them I would probably include "What a Beautiful Name" by Hillsong, "The Cure" by Unspoken, and "Who Says" by Joshua Micah. So here goes my top 37.

37. "Not Be Moved" B.J. Putnam  I could see this as a devotion song to do with the grandkids. Has potential for shaking, pushing, falling, catching and all kinds of kinetic energy

2. "Best Day Ever"  KJ52   My dog's theme song. Seriously though, I don't get how Christians can be so gloomy when our future is so amazing and our present consists in a relationship with the One who made us   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4nD_hsbGQ0

1. "The Return"  Third Day  A Bonus Track??? This is how CCM began. Clear, haunting, bold lyrics, challenging believers and unbelievers alike. And a little brass, guitar solo thrown in. Third Day lyrics on this album may be simple but that's OK with me  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Szk-VGkbbT8

As far as albums, full length albums/CDs/LPs are becoming more scarce as people just release songs and Eps digitally. Here go my favorites of the year.

1. Third Day - "Revival"     No surprise if you saw the above list of songs. Wish they would go in concert again

2. Iron Bell Music - "God that saves"    Hope they can continue writing great songs

3. Manafest - "Stones"      Just when I thought he was done, he comes out with a great album.

4. Passion  2017

5. We Are Leo - "The Rush and the Roar"

6. Plumb - God Help Me EP
