Thoughts From Hebrews - Day 31

                                          Hebrews 11:10-16

 10 For he (Abraham) was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God. 11 And by faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age, was enabled to bear children because she considered him faithful who had made the promise. 12 And so from this one man, and he as good as dead,came descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sand on the seashore.
13 All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance, admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth. 14 People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. 15 If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.

 She (Zipporah) bore a son, and he (Moses) named him Gershom; for he said, “I have been an alien residing in a foreign land.”  Ex. 2:22

      Here is the mindset of faith. I call it the Gershom mindset.A person living by faith has the mindset that they are an alien living in a foreign land. I'm a citizen of heaven temporarily living on this planet, the kingdom of earth where I really don't belong. I am ET waiting to be beamed up. I'm just visiting this planet so as Paul says "A good soldier doesn't get involved in civilian affairs." Imagine being a soldier sent to Afghanistan and saving up all your pay to buy a house there. That's CRAZY! You are leaving there when your deployment is over - why settle down roots? As a soldier you would be an alien there and your job is to accomplish your mission and go home!

      The writer of Hebrews would say that is the problem of people not living by faith - they see Earth as their home.

     This passage is full of references to the Gershom mindset. Here are six;

1. "You suffered along with those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions" 10:34

2." For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God"  11:10

3. "Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one."  11:16

4. " He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward."  11:26

5. "There were others who were tortured, refusing to be released so that they might gain an even better resurrection." 11:35

6. "Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God"  12:2

       I'm a short timer here and Paul in 2Corinthians 5 would say I'm an ambassador to this planet. I'm from Heaven and will be returning to Heaven but until then, I'm representing Heaven and my King to the people living here in a winsome, respectful way. I've heard it said, "He's so Heavenly minded that he's no earthly good." The writer of Hebrews would beg to differ. He would say, "To be earthly good, you have to be Heavenly minded."  Are you? Keep looking up!
