Teen Devotion - The Law vs. Grace

1. Watch the Doug episode.
2. How did Doug become a slave to Judy?
3. What were some signs that he wasn't having fun?
4. Why did the contract go on and on even though it was only supposed to last a week?
5. Was there any way to get free from it?
6. What do you think Doug did at the end when Judy needed help?
7. Read Rom. 8:1-4 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Romans%208:1-4&version=NLT What does Judy's contract symbolize? What do we have to do to get free from it?
8. Read Galatians 5:13-14 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Galatians%205:13-14&version=NLT Were the things Doug was doing for Judy good things or bad things? What should Doug  do now that he is free from the contract?

Note to teachers: Because of sin we were under the law in the Old Testament. The Law had us do good things but it seemed like a cruel taskmaster because we could never satisfy it and it kept pointing out more things we were doing wrong. When Christ came He took the law upon Himself and obeyed it all for us. All we have to do is admit our sin and fall on our knees asking for His mercy, which like Doug's parents is given readily. Once forgiven, we are free. The burden is released from us. But that doesn't mean we lay around on our beds celebrating and indulging ourselves. We actually then are free to serve others and do the things required of us by the law, not out of guilt or blackmail but through the power of the Holy Spirit serving each other in love. If the video were continued we would see that Doug did the same thing to Judy (obviously Doug needs to get saved :)
